IndiGo to Increase Fuel Surcharge on Domestic, International Flights From October 6

IndiGo is set to increase fuel surcharges on domestic and international flights from October 6, citing a sharp rise in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices and its impact on operating costs.

The revised charges will apply to new bookings made from 12:01 am on October 6, the airline said on Monday.

For domestic flights, the additional fuel surcharge will range from Rs 375 to Rs 1,300, depending on the distance travelled. The revised slabs are Rs 375 for journeys up to 500 km, Rs 600 for 501–1,000 km, Rs 900 for 1,001–1,500 km, Rs 1,150 for 1,501–2,000 km and Rs 1,300 for routes longer than 2,000 km.

For international flights, the fuel surcharge will range from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000, depending on the route.

IndiGo, India’s largest airline, said ATF prices have remained volatile in recent months, with geopolitical developments in the Middle East contributing to market uncertainty. According to the airline, ATF prices rose by more than 14% month-on-month, taking them to among their highest levels in the past decade.

The airline said the sustained increase in fuel costs had made the revision necessary across its domestic and international network, as aviation fuel accounts for a significant share of airline operating expenses.

The latest move comes shortly after IndiGo increased several ancillary fees in September, including charges for infant travel, unaccompanied minors and excess baggage.

The airline raised its domestic infant travel fee to Rs 3,000 from Rs 2,200, while charges for international flights vary by route. IndiGo’s website lists fees of Rs 5,999 for unaccompanied minors on domestic flights and Rs 12,999 on international routes.

The higher fuel surcharge is expected to increase the overall cost of new IndiGo bookings from October 6, with the additional amount varying according to the flight’s distance and destination.
